A brief history of Chinese rugs and carpets
The Chinese rug making industry is many centuries old, with a long and rich history. Unfortunately textiles such as rugs are difficult to preserve, however the oldest surviving examples of Chinese rug making date from the time of the last emperor of the Chen Dynasty. Although old and very rare examples are available, carpet weaving in China did not become a widely-accepted craft until the last half of the 18th century, largely because of the scarcity of wool.
China has long be renowned for its creation of superb quality goods which were purely made for export overseas, such as ceramics. However, Chinese carpets were initially made almost exclusively for internal sale. The rugs and carpets produced were of extremely high quality and only those who were very rich and of high status would have been able to afford them.
Despite this, once China increased contact with the West, rug and carpet production began to diversify into the creation of cheaper products, designed to appeal to Western tastes. As such, during the 1930s and into the early 40s, Chinese rug production became increasingly affordable, encouraging art deco rug makers to have their products made in China.
Antique Chinese rugs are instantly recognisable with their intricate designs which usually feature floral images, mythical animals and symbols from the natural world. A range of colours are used, with the most common including red, blue, yellow, white and beige.
