Intricate lacquer application processes developed into an artistic craft during China’s Shang dynasty, with large quantities of lacquerware being made during the Eastern Zhou period.
Over time, the techniques used became increasingly skilled, with new styles developing which made use of decorative features made from high-value materials such as gold, silver and mother of pearl. As such, the Chinese artistic tradition of using lacquer dates back many hundreds of years, and can still be found in pieces made during the present day.
