Zhejiang Carved Cabinet
Zhejiang, circa 1900
This unusual cabinet is quite typical of the furniture produced in and around Zhejiang province west of Shanghai. It is made from fir wood - a common material in that part of China, and finished in a rich, reddish brown. Although fairly simple in style, with doors that fit directly into the upper and lower frames on wooden dowel hinges, the doors are nicely decorated with relief carvings of bamboo, the smaller panels at the top picked out in a paler colour. The cabinet has a single removable shelf inside, and is nicely sized for versatile storage in a living room or bedroom.
