Yoke-Back Side Chair, Warm Elm
The name 'Yoke-Back' chair comes from the curved top rail seen on this timeless Chinese design and seen here finished in our warm elm. The style first appeared in China hundreds of years ago and by the Ming dynasty had become widespread - placed in pairs against a wall when not use and brought into the middle of the room for seating when needed. Since its early development this style of chair changed very little through the centuries, with only slight modifications or regional variations seen up to the modern day. Antique chairs were often decorated with carvings of good luck symbols or animals, and the 'S' shaped curved back splat on ours shows a dragon in carved relief. The seat has a smoothed rattan inlay and work perfectly as dining chairs, with a desk or as occasional chairs.
