Yoke-Back Side Chair, Light Elm
Since its early development this style of chair has changed very little through the centuries, with only slight modifications or regional variations seen up to the modern day. Our light elm version shows off the beautiful wood grain, the seat itself has a smoothed rattan inlay and they work perfectly as dining chairs, with a desk or as occasional chairs. The name 'Yoke-Back' chair comes from the curved top rail seen on this timeless Chinese design. The style first appeared in China hundreds of years ago and by the Ming dynasty had become widespread - placed in pairs against a wall when not use and brought into the middle of the room for seating when needed. Antique chairs were often decorated with carvings of good luck symbols or animals, and the 'S' shaped curved back splat on ours shows a dragon in carved relief.
