Shanxi Side Table with Drawers
Shanxi, circa 1860
With a lovely worn patina and colour and three useful storage drawers, this would make a wonderful little console table. Made from elm wood and with traces of the old black lacquer still showing on the legs and sides, the table is from Shanxi province in central China. It would have been used originally to store valuables and personal effects. The drawers each have a simple, moulded detail and ring handles and are framed with metal studs. The thick, squared legs fit directly into the extended top surface of the table using mortise joints. An understated piece with a simple, rustic character that would fit easily into a modern space.
