Shanxi Carved Console, Chinese Table
Shanxi, circa 1900
This very unusual table is from Shanxi province. The front apron and spandrels are decorated with a highly stylised scrolling pattern that was in vogue during the Qing dynasty and which gives the table an art deco feel. Both the front and back also have a central, decorative curved support, once in a bright red lacquer but now faded to subtler tones. The finish on the table is original, the black lacquer now worn particularly around the feet and edges. This is a very distinctive piece that would add interest to any modern setting.
