Pair of Tall Elm Armchairs
Shanxi, circa 1860
These wonderful armchairs are from Shanxi province and have unusually high backs, giving them a very grand appearance. Made from elm and in their original finish, the dark lacquer has worn on the seats and footrest to show the paler, more natural colour of the wood. The long backrests are shaped in a shallow 'S' curve for comfort and are each carved through in a lovely design showing deer, representing longevity, set within trees and flowers. The top rails are curved in a style typical of Shanxi chairs, and meet the subtly curved seat posts at either side. This is one of the more unusual, rarer pairs of chairs we have had the fortune to source and they would add a real wow factor to a reception room or hallway.
