Pair of Shanxi Lamphanger Chairs
Shanxi, circa 1880
These lovely chairs are in elm wood and originate from Shanxi province in central China. They are referred to as 'Yoke-Back' (or sometimes 'lamphanger') chairs due to the shape of the top rails and the pronounced curves, in this case, are typical of chairs from the Shanxi region. The chair arms are also beautifully curved in a subtle 'S' shape and extend over the front supporting posts, which fit through the seats to form the chairs' front legs. Unusually, the backsplats are formed with three panels fitted between two curved posts rather than with a single full length panel. The finish is aged to a lovely multi-toned, golden brown and these would make a lovely addition set in a hallway or reception room. Sold as a pair, the price shown is for the two chairs.
