Narrow Elm Altar Table
Shanxi, circa 1880
The long, narrow proportions of this elegant table make it easy to fit into a hallway as a display surface for family photos and ornaments. It was produced in Shanxi province in the late 19th century, where it would have been used as an altar table for offerings to ancestors. The table is made from elm, with the original finish worn to show the wonderful colour, tone and grain of the wood. The thick table top extends over the legs, which are supported by double stretchers. The style is simple but classically Chinese, and the table would make a wonderful statement console in any setting.
