Ming Bookshelf, Black Lacquer
Made from solid elm, our black lacquer bookshelf is designed so the middle shelf houses two shallow drawers with brass handles for extra storage. Bookshelves were used by the ancient Chinese scholarly classes, but unlike in the west, they preferred to stack books on the shelves rather than have them stood upright. Shelves therefore tended to be deeper than their western equivalent. This reproduction version is therefore a little narrower than the originals but is otherwise in keeping with the simple style of Ming furniture.
