Low Kang Cabinet, Black Lacquer
Kang cabinets were used to hold all sorts of general household items, as well as valuables often stored in hard to reach or 'secret' sections inside. Our version, seen here in black lacquer, has plenty of space for storage and is made from solid wood, with brass hardware. These long, low cabinets are ideal for use as a TV stand, with three central drawers and two cupboard sections, each with a removable shelf inside. They are based on the low level furniture that would be placed on the 'kang' - a raised, hollow platform made from brick or earth that would be heated from below and which formed the main living space in Chinese homes in the colder northern provinces.
