Large Carved Xinjiang Sideboard
Xinjiang, circa 1920
This beautifully carved long, low sideboard is a great example of the furniture produced in the far western province of Xinjiang. Originally made as a large daybed with fixed panels at the front and much deeper in size, it has been reduced in depth and opened up with doors and drawers to create this stunning sideboard. As a daybed it would have been brightly painted in vibrant colours, but the finish has been stripped back to show the natural colour of the chunky pine wood. The carvings on the doors, drawers and surrounding frames show various geometric patterns - the designs heavily influenced by the Muslim populations of central Asia that border Xinjiang.
