Elm Daybed Low Table
Shanxi, circa 1880
This simply designed table is in a style referred to in Chinese as a 'ta'. It would originally have been produced as a daybed, used for seating or reclining on during the day. In a modern home and with ample space it would make a stunning large coffee table. The thick table top is fitted flush to the legs, which taper down slightly to quite square, angular horse hoof feet. Otherwise the style is extremely simple. The thick elm would once have been finished all over with a dark lacquer, but this has worn on the top surface to leave a characterful patina that blends many different tones of the old finish and paler wood. A simple statement piece that would add interest and impact to any interior.
