Decorative Marriage Bed Fascia
Jiangsu, circa 1850
Beautifully hand-crafted from pine and beech wood, this intricate marriage bed fascia is a work of art. It originates from Jiangsu province, or possibly neighbouring Anhui, and features fine carvings in deep relief set within geometric patterns. The various large carvings show various characters and scenes from Chinese mythology, smoothly finished and wonderfully detailed. These are in a deep, dark brown, and would once have been picked out in bright gold. Traces of the gold are still in place in some parts, but it is largely worn to the darker base which contrasts nicely with the paler wood surround.
The main carvings are embellished with smaller floral carvings and the wonderful, interspersing patterns around them, made up from intricate mortise and tenon joints. The work that went into producing this piece, which formed just one part of the original four poster marriage bed, is extraordinary. Use it today as a unique headboard or as an eye-catching wall feature.
