Carved Console Table, Light Elm
This stunning light elm piece is a reproduction of desks that were common in China during the later Qing dynasty, used by the scholarly classes in Beijing. Ideal used as a modern day console table with a beautiful lattice shelf at the bottom. The design of this low lattice shelf harks back to earlier door and window panels in Chinese homes and is made in the same way - each individual piece of wood fitting into the next with mortise and tenon joints. The circular brass handles on the two drawers add a further oriental touch while the addition of a smooth rattan panel into the top surface makes it more hardwearing.
