Black Lacquer Elm Armoire
Shanxi, circa 1880
This imposing cabinet is in a box like, square-cornered style, with heavy metal hinges and door hardware. It was produced in Shanxi province in the late 19th century, with the elm wood finished in a dark lacquer. Both the finish and the hardware are original. The feet end in classic 'horse hoof' shapes but otherwise the cabinet's design is very plain. With two shelves inside - one incorporating two shallow drawers - and two further drawers below the doors, the cabinet gives plenty of storage either in a bedroom or reception room.
