Antique Chinese Medicine Chest
Shanxi, circa 1860
This beautiful medicine chest is one of the nicest we have come across in recent times. Once used either in a wealthy home or more likely by a Chinese apothecary, it would have held the various herbs and remedies used in Chinese medicine. The forty-two small drawers are each divided into four sections by internal dividers, with each section used to hold a specific item. The front of each drawer is labelled to show the original contents, read clockwise from the top to indicate what was stored in each section from front to back. Three wider drawers at the bottom would have held other instruments associated with the apothecary. The finish over the elm wood is original - a dark lacquer that contrasts nicely with the labels. The cabinet is in excellent condition and is a type that is increasingly rare.
