Mid Size Red and Gold Painted Cabinet

This characterful cabinet comes from Shanxi province in northern China and dates from the mid nineteenth century. It is finished in a rich red lacquer that has worn attractively over time, revealing a wonderfully soft patina. The front panels are decorated with detailed painted scenes, showing groups of figures in a courtyard setting, rendered in black and gilded to stand out beautifully against the warm red background.
