Gansu Cream Painted Sideboard
Gansu, circa 1920
The paintings of houses and figures on the front of this old sideboard are in faded black and red, but still stand out against the dark cream lacquer. The cabinet is from Gansu in western China, in a style quite typical of the region, with an extended top surface over thick pine frames. When it was made the inside of the cabinet would have been accessible only via the two central doors. What were fixed panels either side have been converted into additional doors for practicality. The hardware is new but in keeping with the style of the original handles and hinges. This would make a beautiful accent piece as a dining room sideboard or in a living room.
