Low Elm Table with Drawer
Henan, circa 1900
This simple table is in elm wood and originates from the northern Chinese province of Henan. It may well have been cut down from a higher level table at some point as the style and dimensions are unusual. The single deep drawer, mounted with an iron handle, is set within thick frames and the table legs, which fit into the extended table top with mortise and tenon joints. The finish has been stripped back to the more natural elm wood beneath, with a lovely warm tone and wide patterned grain.
