Three Drawer Carved Antique Coffer Table
Shaanxi, circa 1880
The lovely, deep carvings and metal studs on the drawers of this table are a typical feature of the tables and storage chests produced in Shaanxi province in central China. The central flower and scrolling leaf design on the full width upper drawer is mirrored in the smaller carvings on the two lower drawers, all picked out in a paler finish that contrasts with the table's darker frames, sides and top. The top itself extends over the frames and legs, providing a broader display surface today for photos and ornaments.
Originally the table would have been used both for displaying offerings to ancestors and for storing valuables, with the drawers able to be secured. The darker sections would have been in a deep black lacquer, contrasting with brightly painted drawers. Each of these have aged and worn over the years to give a more neutral blend of colours that would fit easily into any interior.
