Long Decorative Carved Panel in Red and Gold
Jiangsu, circa 1820
This long, horizontal piece once formed part of an ornate internal room divider and is made of elm wood. It originates from Jiangsu province in eastern China, made during the early 19th century. It is comprised of five separate carved panels which impressively retain much of their original gold, red, and black paint. This piece would have been affixed high in the room to define either its length or breadth. For a larger room there would simply have been more panels added to a single piece.
