Long Antique Open Carved Panel in Five Sections
Jiangsu, circa 1880
This wonderfully carved, long horizontal panel was originally designed as part of an elaborate internal room divider in a home in Jiangsu province, eastern China. It is made from elm, in a lacquered finish that enhances the rich tone of the wood. The panel is made up of five smaller, rectangular panels, each set within wide frames and beautifully carved through to show various robed figures, including one on horseback, set against a background of scrolling trees and flowers. The panels are beautifully crafted, each one made from a single piece of wood.
The piece would have been affixed high in a room to define either its length or width. Today it would add an interesting, decorative feature hung above a bed or sideboard.
