Decorative Wooden Tea Barrel

This exquisite nineteenth century wooden barrel from is from the city of Hangzhou in Zhejiang province and is a rare find, particularly in such fine condition. Intricately constructed from interlocked panels and reinforced with two brass bands, the front three panels boast delicate floral motifs in carved relief, pick out against a light blue background. The ornamental handle, beautifully carved and highlighted in gold, also secures the lid in place, ensuring that the contents are kept safe from spillage. Originally the barrel would have been used to store green tea leaves - a precious commodity in nineteenth century China. Its excellent craftsmanship and intricate carvings demonstrate the wealth of its former owner.
