Decorative Document Box with Bone Inlay
Henan, circa 1920
This attractive little cupboard was produced in Henan province in eastern China from beech wood, with bone inlay used to add the detailed decoration on the doors and drawers. The pale bone shows various plants and flowers, along with butterflies and , on the two smaller upper drawers, four figures in symmetry. The panel to the bottom right is removed to access two small drawers behind it. The cabinet would have been used to store general household items originally, and today would make a lovely jewellery box or could be used for cosmetics.
