Decorative Carved Antique Door Lintel
Hebei, circa 1900
This long, decorative carving has been crafted from beech wood, now stripped back to its pale, natural shade. Originally crafted in Hebei province near Beiing at the beginning of the last century, it was designed to adorn a doorway of a wealthy family home. It features four characters in relief carving at the sides of an elongated arch, with further carvings in a floral design in the centre. Below this the apron has been intricately carved in an open, scrolling pattern. The feet at the bottom of the frame have been carved in the form of two robed figures, each facing the other. With original detail and character formed over the decades, this unusual panel can be used to bring a touch of sophistication as wall decoration mounted over a sideboard, console or bed.
