Produced in Shanxi province around 1850, this striking cabinet is a wonderful example of the richly decorated furniture for which the region is renowned. The deep, worn black lacquered finish provides a dramatic backdrop for the colourful paintings that adorn the two sets of doors. Arranged as still-life groupings, the motifs depict vases of flowers, scholar’s objects and auspicious artefacts, all rendered in warm tones of gold, ochre and muted green. These images would traditionally symbolise refinement, learning and prosperity—qualities that made such cabinets desirable additions to well-appointed northern Chinese homes.

The cabinet’s form is typical of mid-Qing furniture from Shanxi, with its square-framed doors, recessed panelled sides and stepped feet. Inside, each cupboard section includes a removable shelf and a small internal drawer—ideal for storing valuables, documents or smaller household items. The aged lacquer has worn beautifully over time, revealing a soft patina and glimpses of the earlier underlayers, which only enhance the piece’s authenticity and character.
