This long, low table would be great as a narrow coffee table in front of a sofa, with useful storage space inside each of the three drawers, or perhaps as a stand for a flat screen TV. It is from Shanxi province in central China, and originally would have been produced as a higher level display surface or altar table. The legs have been reduced in height to create this lower level unit. Made from elm wood, the table is finished in black, overlaid with a once bright red lacquer on the front. This is still largely intact on the three drawers, but worn on the legs and frames to leave an unusual, unique finish. The wide table top extends over the legs and is in its original black finish, now worn and marked from decades of use to leave a wonderful patina.
