This charming cabinet originates from Inner Mongolia and dates to around the late nineteenth century. Smaller, more compact pieces such as this were common in Mongolian for their portability, and were used for storing everyday items, clothing or prayer objects. The cabinet retains its original dark red lacquer finish, now beautifully worn with age to reveal warm, earthy tones and a wonderfully rich patina. The paintings on the doors, once brightly coloured, are now picked out in soft golds and dark browns, the age-softened palette giving the cabinet a more subtle decorative quality rather than a bold painted finish.

Each of the two doors features a painted depiction of scholar’s vessels — traditional Chinese motifs associated with learning, refinement and cultural cultivation. The vessels shown include ritual bronzes and ornate wine vessels, all stylised in the Mongolian folk-art tradition. These objects belong to what is known as the “Hundred Antiques” (bai gu 器), a collection of motifs symbolising knowledge, good taste and a respect for classical values. Their presence on domestic furniture like this was believed to bring similar virtues into the home.

The cabinet’s form is typical of Mongolian craftsmanship, with a simple rectangular profile, straight legs and frame and panel construction. Metal ring pulls are fitted to the two drawers and doors, all likely original or early replacements. Inside, the space is divided by a single shelf, making the cabinet practical for modern storage.

Today, this piece would work beautifully as a side cabinet, bedside table or for hallway storage, bringing colour, character and a touch of Asian charm to any interior. Its compact size and rich patina make it ideal for adding warmth to both contemporary and traditional spaces, while its symbolic decoration adds cultural depth and authenticity.
