Large Painted Shandong Trunk
Shandong, circa 1920
This large, deep, beautifully decorated trunk would most likely have been used for storing clothes and other personal possessions in a home in Shandong province, northern China, The old red finish and now muted paintings are still largely intact, the paintings showing vases and various items associated with a scholar, including a painted table screen in the centre. The upper part of the thick base is divided into three panels, each painted with a simple floral design. The hardware on the front of the chest is new, but similar to the lost original lock plate. The chest's generous proportions provide a huge amount of storage space for clothes, bedding or other items - ideal for getting on top of the clutter!
