Pair of Carved Emperor Armchairs

product code: ATC-RGX-230388
£1,195.00
D49 x H100 x W59 x cm

Jiangsu, circa 1860

Crafted from beech wood in Jiangsu province in Eastern China, these remarkable chairs were likely designated for use by important guests or family elders, placed as a pair in a reception room. Dating back to the mid 19th century, their design is heavier and more ornate than the earlier, more mininmalist style of Ming furniture.

Their scrolling arms and posts are adorned with S shapes and end in stylized dragons. The wide backrests are each fitted with four panels that incorporte beautiful, detailed carvings. The two small lower panels are carved through with delicate floral patterns, with a similar design in the top panels in relief. The larger, central panels are more ornate, with beautiful carvings of various figures from literature set against an interlinking, honeycomb frame. Four circular long life symbols are set around the main carvings. These carved sections would once have been in bright colours - reds, greens, blacks and golds - to contrast with the plainer arms and lower parts of the chairs. the colours are still visible but now more subdued in tone.

Place them in a hallway or reception room either side of a console or sideboard for a luxurious look. Sold as a pair, the price shown is for the two chairs.

Aftercare

Lacquered furniture should need little cleaning other than the regular use of a dry, soft cloth or duster. To remove any stains, use a dry or slightly damp cloth. Avoid the use of too much water as this will affect the surface. Frequent waxing should not be needed but can be carried out every couple of months using a good quality natural beeswax. Do not use the cheaper silicone furniture sprays as these may affect the finish. Never use any abrasive cleaning products or chemicals.

Products in a natural finish can be cleaned with a soft, damp cloth. Use a natural beeswax every few months to protect and nourish the wood.

Do not place hot or wet items directly onto the product surface as this can mark the finish. Clean any spills as soon as possible.

Avoid placing your furniture near a radiator or other heat source as this can lead to the wood drying out and shrinking, causing cracks or splitting. Ideally, leave at least a metre between your furniture and any heat source. Avoid also placing your furniture in strong, direct sunlight as the colour may fade over time.
