Chinese Elm Bench with Scroll Feet
Shanxi, circa 1890
This little elm bench is in a classic Chinese style, with S shape stretchers at the front and back and legs that taper down to horse hoof feet. More unusually the feet are decorated with simple scrolling patterns - a motif that was quite common during the Qing period. Once finished all over in dark lacquer, the seat has worn over the years to show the paler elm wood, with its deep grain. Use it for extra seating anywhere from the kitchen to a bathroom, at the end of a bed or as a side table next to a sofa.
