Red Lacquer Shanxi Sideboard with Carved Spandrels
Shanxi, circa 1920
This unique sideboard would make a perfect statement piece in any home. Dating from the early part of the last century, it originates from Shanxi province in central China and is typical of much of the decorative, brightly decorated cabinets produced in the region. Originally only the central doors would have been in place, with fixed panels either side. These outer panels have been converted in to doors more recently for practicality.
Each of the doors, as well as the three panels below and the apron, are beautifully decorated with paintings of flowers in golds and greens, now less bright than they would have been to give a more subtle contrast with the deep red lacquer base. The spandrels at either side feature open carvings and taper down to curved feet. The small door handles are a new addition, along with the shelves inside for useful storage space. With a new shiny finish applied to add depth and richness to the colours, the sideboard exudes old-world charm and character and would make an eye-catching addition to any interior.
