Large Shanxi Painted Sideboard
Shanxi, circa 1870
This large, imposing sideboard would make a unique statement piece in a dining room or living space. It comes from Shanxi province and still features its original finish and paintings in contrasting reds, creams and blues. The cabinet was produced around the late nineteenth century, used for storage and also for displaying votive offerings. Each door has an inset panel, with a central circular painting showing classic mountainous landscapes and with an inscription set above.
The thick, chunky frames and panels are in pine and provide a perfect base for the once bright lacquer and detailed paintings. Here the faded nature of the paintings and more muted, time worn colours and patina give this piece a wonderful sense of history and character. With three removable shelves inside and plenty of storage space, it would add impact to any setting.
