Six Drawer Antique Carved Coffer
Shaanxi, circa 1880
This wonderful table is in the distinctive style seen in furniture from the central Chinese province of Shaanxi - location of the ancient capital of Xi'an. Furniture from the region was typically robust, with thick frames and panels, but would be decorated with ornate, deep carvings finished in bright colours.
This old storage coffer is an excellent example, with each of its six drawers featuring deep carvings in floral patterns and studded with heavy iron hardware. The carvings would originally have been picked out in bright reds, blues and greens to contrast against the deep black lacquer surrounding them. Over the years these colours have faded to much more subtle, muted tones that would fit more easily into a more neutral interior scheme.
The chest is made from elm wood, with thick, moulded legs recessed under a chunky overhanging top surface. Again, the top would once have been in black but has worn to show the paler wood underneath, giving a unique, aged look. This is a wonderful piece in authentic condition that would add interest and character to any setting.
