Elm Serving Table
Shanxi, circa 1880
Originally used for display or as a table for serving food and drink, this old table is made from elm wood, with a thick extended top over recessed legs. The original reddish brown finish has largely worn, particularly on the top, to give a lovely worn patina. The style is functional rather than elegant, with straight stretchers and double braces between the legs. The legs themselves fit directly into the table top, flanked by simple, curved spandrels. With its years of wear and use, the table has a rustic, characterful look that would add interest to any setting.
