Pair of Tall Lattice Window Panels, Natural and Red
Jiangsu, circa 1880
These two tall, narrow panels once formed part of the sides of a large Chinese marriage bed in the city of Suzhou in Jiangsu province. They are finely carved, with the large, central panels in open fretwork showing a central 'missing vase' design. The smaller panels above and below are in deep carved relief showing floral designs and, in the two large square panels towards the bottom, various figures in battle. These panels are lacquered in red and black, inset with mother of pearl. The darker reds and blacks of the carved sections contrast with the lighter outer frames in elm wood. Today the panels would make a lovely wall feature, perhaps set either side of a bed or fireplace.
Sold as a pair, the price shown is for the two panels.
