Pair of Antique Open Carved Window Panels
Zhejiang, circa 1840
These beautiful panels are carved from elder wood, with the uppder main panel carved through in a lattice design and the larger, lower panel in carved relief. These main panels each feature symmetrical scenes showing pairs of figures in greeting. The lower carvings are in deep relief, beautifully detailed and showing a backdrop of trees and pagoda rooftops.
The panels were produced early in the nineteenth century in Hangzhou - a large city in the southern province of Zhejiang famous for its gardens and lakes. They would originally have been made as part of a larger set, designed as internal dividers in a Chinese home. Today they would make a lovely, unusual decorative feature on a wall.
Sold as a pair, the price shown is for the two panels.
