Pair of Carved Window Panels with Flower Vases
Jiangsu, circa 1880
These beautifully carved panels are in elder wood and originate from Jiangsu province in eastern China. They would have been designed as internal window screens, allowing air to flow through the home during the hot summer months while providing a level of privacy. The main carvings on each large, central panel show flower vases, each set within intricate scrolling patterns interspersed with a meandering floral design. The upper panels are carved through in a similar pattern, whilst the lower panels are in deep carved relief, again showing a vase and flowers.
The lattice work and carvings are extraordinary, with a very high level of skill shown in the individually cut sections of wood and the wonderful detail on the patterned vases. The panels would make a superb architectural feature as wall decor, with the open carvings throwing interesting shadows when lit.
Sold as a pair, the price shown is for the two panels.
