Long Carved Panel with Mother of Pearl
Jiangsu, circa 1880
This long carved panel was originally the front part of a Chinese marriage bed, produced in the city of Suzhou in China's eastern Jiangsu province. It is divided into three sections, with each one incorporating a lozenge shaped carving showing various figures at court. These are varnished in red, black and gold, with a mother-of-pearl fragment inlay. The carvings are set within a geometric pattern made with individual pieces of wood, lacquered in red to contrast with the surrounding natural wood frame. The spacers between these sections are carved in the form of flowers. At nearly two metres in length, the panel would make a lovely wall decoration over a bed or sideboard.
