Long Antique Carved Panel in Five Scenes
Jiangsu, circa 1880
This long, intricately carved horizontal panel would make a wonderful feature today, hung on a wall above a console table or bed. It was produced in Jiangsu province in eastern China as part of an internal divider in a home. Made from elm, it is made up of five rectangular panels, each carved through to show various figures from Chinese history or legend, all dressed in traditional robes and set centrally against a backdrop of swirling trees and flowers. Each of the five panels is exquisitely carved from a single piece of wood, set within a scalloped, moulded frame.
