Camphor Carved Window Panel
Jiangsu, circa 1880
Produced in Jiangsu province to the north of Shanghai, this lovely wooden panel would have formed part of an internal wall or window within a Chinese home. A central circle includes a floral motif, and the outer sections incorporate smaller carved flowers as well as deer - a symbol in China for longevity. The outer frame is in fir wood, while the central section is in camphor - a wood favoured for carved details in Chinese furniture. The panel would make an interesting decorative feature, lit to throw shadows onto a wall.
