Carved Antique Lattice Window Panel
Jiangsu, circa 1880
This lovely wall panel was produced around the end of the Qing dynasty in Jiangsu province, to the north of Shanghai. Originally made as one of a number of internal window panels that would have opened out onto the inner courtyard of a Chinese home, today it would make a beautiful decorative panel hung on a wall, with the lattice design and carvings casting interesting shadows. The frame is made from fir, while the more intricate sections are in camphor wood - a material ideal for carving. The lattice section is made up of individual lengths of wood, fitted together with mortise and tenon joints and interspersed with carvings of flowers.
