Shanxi, circa 1850

This characterful cabinet comes from Shanxi province in northern China and dates from the mid nineteenth century. It is finished in a rich red lacquer that has worn attractively over time, revealing a wonderfully soft patina. The front panels are decorated with detailed painted scenes, showing groups of figures in a courtyard setting, rendered in black and gilded to stand out beautifully against the warm red background. The gold decoration has worn over the years to show the darker base pigment below in large sections, adding to the sense of the cabinet's time worn character.

The imagery depicts scholars and attendants, gathered in what appears to be a garden or pavilion. Scenes like these were popular on furniture from Shanxi, where cabinet makers often drew inspiration from classical literature and theatre. The presence of musicians, scholars or dignitaries symbolised learning and refinement, while garden settings conveyed peace, harmony and the cultured lifestyle idealised by the scholarly classes.

The cabinet's surrounding borders are filled with scrolling floral patterns, with roundels along the lower apron containing stylised blossoms. In Chinese symbolism, flowers such as peonies represent prosperity and honour, while scrolling vines signify growth and continuity. Together, these decorative motifs express auspicious wishes for a flourishing household.

The doors fit directly into the cabinet's frames on wooden dowels, allowing the maximum canvas for the painted motifs. A beautifully shaped lock plate is at the centre of the doors, its brass surface perfectly complementing the red and gold. The cabinet’s proportions — straight legs, recessed panels and a slightly elevated base — are typical of Shanxi furniture, known for its sturdy construction and bold decorative tradition.

Originally used for storing clothing, documents or small valuables, this cabinet would today make a striking side cabinet, drinks cupboard or hallway feature. Its rich colour, timeworn finish and evocative painted scenes bring texture, warmth and a strong sense of history to any interior — a wonderful example of the region’s distinctive lacquerwork and folk artistry.
