This low table oozes rustic charm, originally used as a small household table for food preparation, serving or everyday tasks. It is in a simple, vernacular style, with a chunky top extending over slightly splayed legs supported with single stretchers. The table is made from thick pine wood, and originally would have been in a black lacquer finish. This has largely worn away on the top surface, to show the more natural colour of the wood underneath. The original finish is still largely intact on the legs and stretchers, providing a lovely contrast with the top. The legs are fitted directly into the table top and, as was standard in Chinese joinery, the four tenon ends are visible within the table top.

Today the table makes a versatile and characterful piece for a modern interior. Its low height and sturdy form make it ideal as a coffee table, display table for ceramics or books, or as a unique centrepiece in a living room or snug. The natural beauty of elm and the table’s rustic integrity allow it to sit comfortably in both contemporary and traditional settings.
