Yoke-Back Side Chair, Black Lacquer, Ex Display
The seat of our black lacquer chair has a smoothed rattan inlay and works perfectly as a dining chair, with a desk or as occasional seating. Antique chairs were often decorated with carvings of good luck symbols or animals, and the 'S' shaped curved back splat on ours shows a dragon in carved relief. The name 'Yoke-Back' chair comes from the curved top rail seen on this timeless Chinese design. The style first appeared in China hundreds of years ago and by the Ming dynasty had become widespread - placed in pairs against a wall when not use and brought into the middle of the room for seating when needed. Since its early development this style of chair changed very little through the centuries, with only slight modifications or regional variations seen up to the modern day.
Note that the chair on offer is discounted as it is an ex-display item. There is some cracking in the lacquer along with some scuffs and dents. The chair shown here is not the actual piece on sale. Please contact us if you would like photos of the actual piece or any further information.
