Xinjiang Carved Sideboard
Xinjiang, circa 1900
The heavily carved style of this lovely long, low pine sideboard is particular to the furniture of Xinjiang province in the far northwest of China. This piece started life over a hundred years ago as a large daybed, and would have been brightly coloured in pinks, greens and blues. It has been resized from the original deeper proportions and the colours have mostly faded or been stripped back to leave a more natural look, but with a hint of the old finish still embedded within the relief carvings. What were once fixed panels at the front of the unit have been converted into six doors, with plenty of storage space in inside. Ideal today as a sideboard or highly distinctive stand for a large television.
