Two Drawer Carved Kang Table
Shanxi, circa 1870
This charming little table would have originally been used in Shanxi province on the raised, heated 'kang' platform that would be the main living space of a Chinese home in the winter months. Low level furniture like this was used on the kang, with members of the household kneeling or reclining - similar to in Japanese homes. This particular table would once have been in a more vibrant red lacquer, and traces of the original finish are still visible but now worn to the natural wood particularly on the top surface. Two drawers and three fixed panels below are all beautifully decorated with deep relief carvings of flowers.
