Two Door Small Kang Cabinet
Shanxi, circa 1880
This cute little cabinet is from Shanxi province in central China, where it would most likely have been placed on the heated kang platform that formed the main living space in a home during the winter months. With storage space in the two small drawers and central cabinet section, the top surface would have been used as an everyday work surface or to serve food and drink. The cabinet is made from elm, still with its original dark lacquer and hardware, including the metal fixing between the two drawers that would allow these to be locked. Great today as a little coffee table.
